Katharyne Mitchell

Distinguished Professor of Sociology

University of California, Santa Cruz

My current research is focused on the history and physical environment of spaces of containment, especially forced labor camps, asylum holding centers, and deportation facilities. This work is funded through an Alexander von Humboldt research award. In recent work I explored the role of faith-based organizations in providing humanitarian aid and refuge to migrants. I investigated the transnational networking employed by church groups to protect asylum claimants, the policy impacts of church-based forms of activism, and the shifting meanings and practices of sanctuary.
