Katharyne Mitchell
Dean, Division of Social Sciences & Professor of Sociology
University of California, Santa Cruz
I am delighted to serve as dean of the social sciences at UC Santa Cruz. My administrative goals include promoting the exceptional work of the faculty, helping students to thrive on campus and in their daily lives, and supporting the growth and success of our new research initiative, the Institute for Social Transformation.
I am also a professor of sociology, and my current research explores the role of faith-based organizations in providing humanitarian aid and refuge to migrants. I am interested in the transnational networking employed by church groups to protect asylum claimants, the policy impacts of church-based forms of activism, and the shifting meanings and practices of sanctuary.
