I am delighted to serve as dean of the social sciences at UC Santa Cruz. My administrative goals include promoting the exceptional work of the faculty and developing a social sciences research institute. I am also a professor of sociology, and my current research explores the role of faith-based organizations in providing humanitarian aid and refuge to migrants. I am interested in the transnational networking employed by church groups to protect asylum claimants, the policy impacts of church-based forms of activism, and the shifting meanings and practices of sanctuary.
